Summer reflections
HOPE Grove’s THIRD summer was incredible! I am so grateful for this opportunity to provide sensory rich experiences to children of all ages and abilities. I get to witness first hand the power of slow, simple, time in nature. Children with time and space to do what intrigues them. Children with time and space to get immersed in play, to experience wonder and joy!
As a parent to a child with a disability as well “typically” developing children (whatever that means) I can say first hand how much ALL children benefit from our programming. My children have a unique opportunity to attend all of our groups, meeting many new friends who share similarities and differences. I continue to believe that it is so important to have interactions with people who are different from us. We all have strengths and things that are more difficult. At HOPE Grove we acknowledge and accept differences.
Some kids can cross the bridge with no hands securely, some kids hold on tight and inch across or need the support of an adult. Some kids love to play with the wet mud, even painting it all over themselves, some would rather not touch it. Some kids can clearly communicate with their voice, some use a device or sign language to communicate. Some kids can confidently climb while others are unsure and need assistance. Some kids can manage their emotions well, others not so much. Some kids love to be part of the action, some prefer alone time. Some kids love the animals, some may have fears about them. The point is, everyone is included and valued, everyone belongs.
The cautious child can gain inspiration from braver and more coordinated friends. The loud child can soften their voice for a friend with sensitive ears. The child who doesn’t like to swing high can take turns with someone who wants to touch the tree branches. The bigger child can help the smaller child. The smaller child can encourage more imaginative play for the older.
When I think of HOPE Grove I think of:
Kindness
Inclusion
Acceptance
Love
Friendship
Compassion
Understanding
Pride
Confidence
Strength
Determination
Perseverance
Patience
Independence
Self Worth
Bravery
Curiosity
Individuality
Leadership
Another important aspect of HOPE Grove is that we provide opportunities for gross and fine motor skill development. A sad reality is that children nowadays are much weaker than children of past generations, largely in part to the decreased time spent in active free play endeavors and more time in sedentary screen based activities. Running, climbing, moving on uneven terrain, digging in the dirt, and swinging are all activities that promote improved balance and core strength. Using our hands during these activities also increases their strength and coordination, using our fingers to pick up small items like rocks and bugs improves dexterity.
Nature in and of itself provides many benefits too: fresh air, Vitamin D, decreased stress, improved mood, immune support, better eyesight and more!
For all of these reasons and more, I will continue to advocate for PLAY, nature and inclusion for all children (and adults)!
